How I live across my mind, body, relationships and purpose

55 truths, learnings, beliefs & pieces of advice

Fifty-five truths, learnings and beliefs I've collected along the way — on vision, decisions, money, people, time and beginning again.

Your vision comes first

1. You need a vision for your life — write down what you want your life to look like in 10 years. Where do you live, who's around you. What does a regular Tuesday look like.

2. Look at what you did this week and ask if any of it pointed towards that.

3. Find something that is just for you. Have a ritual that becomes your own time and do it daily. For me it's reading or listening to a podcast and meditating.

4. Recognise what you can control and focus on that rather than on trying to control what other people do.

5. Stop asking whether you're ready — ask whether you're willing.

6. You don't find yourself, you build yourself through actions and decisions.

7. Your life changes when your standards become stronger than your moods.

8. Take responsibility without taking all the blame — know your part.

9. Learn about who you actually are — get the therapy, do the inner work.

Decisions, standards and motion

10. Never confuse motion with progress.

11. If everything feels important, you haven't made a decision.

12. The work you avoid is often the work that would really change your life. I did this for years.

13. Always make the decision that creates more options — is it going to help you learn, grow or own.

14. Don't wait for confidence, starting builds confidence.

15. A dream without a calendar is just a preference. Spend on it.

16. Don't make permanent decisions in temporary emotional states.

17. Be useful before you try to be impressive.

18. Your reputation is built in the moment when there is no immediate reward.

Asking, feedback and money

19. Ask for what you want.

20. Think about feedback as information, not criticism.

21. Your job is not to be liked by everyone.

22. Never stay in a place where you are not moving or learning.

23. Recognise your own potential, don't rely on others to do so.

24. Money is not the meaning of life but it creates safety and time and gives you choice and leverage.

25. Know your numbers and finances.

26. Never be embarrassed to ask how money works.

27. Always ask for more money.

28. Purpose doesn't pay the team. Profit does.

29. Do the work, create value first.

People and relationships

30. When people show you who they are, believe them.

31. Find your people.

32. Choose the right partner.

33. Say the difficult things, while it's small.

34. Not every relationship stays.

35. To have good friends you need to be a good friend.

36. Don't take advice from people who don't have to live with the consequences.

Time, balance and ordinary moments

37. There is no perfect time to have a life — if you wait for love, money, work, confidence, fun you might wait forever.

38. Use your time intentionally. Book things, trips, concerts, movie and game nights, holidays — fill your life with all the things and people you love the most.

39. Stop trying to achieve balance every day. Build balance across your life as a whole. Some days will require more work in one area than others but you can have it all and you must.

40. Protect the ordinary moments as much as possible — breakfasts, bed times with the kids, your own personal rituals. Remembering you are not super-human and some times it's not possible to be there but when you are there be present.

41. Failure is expensive so make sure you purchase the lesson — make sure you have fully reviewed what happened and what you have learned from it.

42. Don't let one bad chapter recruit you into a smaller life or a smaller version of yourself.

43. Success is a life you actually want.

44. Recalibration is a requirement. Be in a constant state of evolution.

45. Decide what you're going to do differently.

46. Take massive action on the life you actually want.

Begin again, and again

47. You are allowed to begin again and try something new.

48. Your mind, body, relationships and purpose all need nourished. Look after them like you're watering a garden in summer.

49. You wouldn't go without auditing your business results, so audit your life regularly to check you are on track. Don't let yourself slip into a tolerance trap.

50. Being in nature is healing.

51. Joy is not a luxury, it's a necessity.

52. You have a choice on what you do with your emotions, how you talk to yourself and who you decide to be every day, where you put your energy and precious time.

53. Get a coach or mentor that can help you move the dial — this can be a book or podcast — and take action on what you learn. But you are always the decision maker — only you know what you want.

54. Be grateful for everything you already have.

55. Believe in yourself — be your own biggest cheerleader.
