The life rules that brought me back to joy
At 53, I made a decision.
The life rules that brought me back to joy
I wasn't going to spend another decade waiting for life to begin. I'd become very good at surviving and very bad at living. So I made myself a promise: I was going to do everything in my power to build a life that felt like mine again.
Rule 1: I matter.
This sounds obvious, but for years I behaved as though everyone else's needs came first. I said yes when I wanted to say no. I overworked to prove my worth. I waited for permission to take up space.
Making space for yourself isn't selfish. It's the foundation for everything else. When you value yourself, your decisions begin to reflect that value.
Rule 2: Let go without guilt.
People change. Dreams change. Relationships change. You change.
Sometimes we keep holding onto people, identities, careers or habits simply because we've invested so much time in them. But loving something doesn't mean you owe it your entire future.
Every season of your life asks something different of you. Give yourself permission to answer.
Rule 3: Get curious instead of judging yourself.
Whenever I notice I'm feeling frustrated, anxious or disconnected, I ask one question: Why? Not to criticise myself. To understand myself. Our emotions aren't problems to fix. They're information. Every feeling is pointing towards something that needs attention.
The goal isn't to avoid uncomfortable emotions. It's to listen to what they're trying to tell you.
Rule 4: Find the root, not just the symptom.
For years I treated symptoms. I tried productivity hacks when I needed boundaries. I chased motivation when I actually lacked clarity. I blamed myself when I was simply living out old patterns I'd never questioned.
Real change happens underneath the behaviour. If something keeps repeating in your life, don't ask, How do I stop this? Ask, What is this trying to teach me?
Rule 5: Stop aiming for survival.
So many of us become experts at coping. We function. We perform. We keep everyone else happy. We tell ourselves we're "fine."
But surviving isn't the goal. Thriving is.
When I started making decisions based on what felt expansive rather than simply manageable, everything began to shift. More creativity. More energy. Better relationships. Better work. More joy.
Rule 6: Build your work around your life — not your life around your work.
This might be the biggest lesson I've learned.
For years I organised my life around deadlines, meetings, launches and responsibilities. Eventually I realised something: no amount of success is worth building a life you don't actually enjoy living.
Now I ask a different question: What kind of woman do I want to become?
Then I build my business around supporting that woman — not replacing her.
The rule underneath all the others
For a long time I believed I had to earn rest. Earn happiness. Earn success. Earn love. Earn comfort.
I thought self-abandonment was simply what being a good partner, a good mum, a good employee and a good business owner looked like.
Not anymore.
The older I get, the more I realise joy isn't something you stumble across one day. It's something you choose.
You choose it in your calendar. In your relationships. In your boundaries. In your habits. In the conversations you're willing to have. In the courage to become the person you've always known you could be.
Key Takeaway
If life has started to feel like one long to-do list… If you've been saying "I'm fine" while quietly feeling disconnected… If you've been putting yourself at the bottom of your own priority list… Maybe it's time to write your own rules.
Because the most dangerous place to be isn't unhappy. It's fine.
And the beautiful thing is this: you don't need permission. You only need one decision. One conversation. One small step towards the life that's waiting for you.
That's where joy begins.
